Article in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology confirms benefit of AFL monitoring.

An article published in AJOG (Murphy M, et. all. American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (2015), doi: 10.1016/j.ajog.2015.06.035) confirms previously published result that a high level of lactate in amniotic fluid (AFL) has a high correlation with Caesarean section. The study also confirmed that increasing AFL was associated with higher total Oxytocin dosage (p=0.001).

The study was performed at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin and included 905 delivering women. In the study, spontaneously labouring Single Cephalic Nulliparous women with a gestational age > 37 weeks of gestation were included. AFL was measured using a point of care device (LMU061) from ObsteCare. The only device on the market that is regulatory approved for measuring lactate in amniotic fluid during labor.

These findings confirm that AFL can be used as a good bedside tool when treating women suffering from a dysfunctional delivery. By using AFL monitoring in combination with Oxytocin infusion, the frequency of operative deliveries can be reduced and delivery times be optimized.
